12. Houses in the colonies were made from wood. ... Fortunately, wood was available and plentiful, thanks to the vast forests that covered the region.


Usually, there was only one room with a large fireplace, the floor was packed-down earth, and there were few windows. In addition, there might be a shallow sleeping loft on one side of the room.

 

While they protected the inhabitants from the weather, houses in the 1600s still were often drafty and cold.

 

The colonists learned to make the items they needed, such as chairs, tables, beds, candles, and clothing.

 

 

13. The Susan Constant

The Susan Constant is a ship that took settlers to Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. A replica of the ship was built along with two others for the museum at Jamestown Settlement.
